Didn’t realise USB booting was quite that simple on the Pi 3 B+.
Memory card in a USB card reader, card reader in USB, boots without further hackery.
Doing a loaded dd read of the card via the USB card reader when booted via the card in the card reader results in zero errors at twice the speed
