Liberating Structures - Introduction
While there will always be some justification for blaming leaders (or professors and administrators in education), the more compelling and useful explanation is not that people involved are bad, stupid or incompetent, but rather that the practices they have all learned are neither adapted to today’s realities nor designed to achieve the ideals listed above.
Conventional structures are either too inhibiting (presentations, status reports and managed discussions) or too loose and disorganized (open discussions and brainstorms) to creatively engage people in shaping their own future. They frequently generate feelings of frustration and/or exclusion and fail to provide space for good ideas to emerge and germinate.
Liberating Structures used routinely make it possible to build the kind of organization that everybody wants. They are designed to include everyone in shaping next steps.
alternative approach is both practical and feasible because Liberating Structures are quite simple and easy to learn.

Liberating Structures - 1. 1-2-4-All
Everyone in the group is included (often not the facilitator)
Use bells for announcing transitions
Stick to precise timing, do another round if needed
not to repeat insights already shared
Link ideas that emerge to Design Storyboards, Improv Prototyping, Ecocycle Planning
address a problem or an innovation opportunity
place of a leader “telling” people what to think and do (often unintentionally)
group that tends to be excessively influenced by its leader
basically a variant of the popular Brainstorming method and aims to breed ideas by gradually encouraging team members to think, first individually, then in increasingly large groups
Depending on the level of complexity of the topic, the facilitator can allow more time for each stage if necessary. However, keep time slots as short as possible so as not to affect the workshop, which is meant to be quick and to-the-point.
Otherwise, the same thing seems to happen every time, i.e. one or two people who are more self-confident than the rest make suggestions, while other members of the group listen, keep their thoughts to themselves or twiddle their thumbs.
